Fraternity History

Winter, 1902
George L. Bergen, Howard M. Jefferson, Nathan Lane Jr., and Frederick R. Leach meet while attending night school at New York University and began discussing the need for a 'business fraternity'. They would later become known as 'The Brooklyn Four'.
 
July 16, 1904
An initial constitution is drafted by The Brooklyn Four at Sea Cliff, Long Island.
 
October 5, 1904
The business fraternity is incorporated with George L. Bergen, Howard M. Jefferson, Nathan Lane Jr., Frederick R. Leach, Irving L. Camp, Robert S. Douglas, Daniel V. Duff, Morris S. Rachmil, William O. Tremaine, and Herbert M. Wright as the first brothers.
 
November 22, 1904
Alpha Chapter is founded at New York University with Robert S. Douglas as President.
 
January 10, 1905
'Alpha Kappa Psi' is selected as the fraternity name.
 
March 11, 1905
Alpha Kappa Psi and Alpha Chapter officially become separate entities.
 
May 20, 1905
Alpha Kappa Psi is granted a charter for incorporation by the state of New York.
 
1913
The first 'Diary of Alpha Kappa Psi' is published.
 
1923
Alpha Kappa Psi established the professional fraternity world's first-ever permanent national headquarters when it rented office space in downtown Indianapolis.
 
1921
The first two alumni chapters are installed in New York, New York and Atlanta, GA.
 
March 18, 1922
Alpha Epsilon chapter is installed at The University of Georgia.
 
1932
The first international chapter is formed in Canada.
 
1947
The Alpha Kappa Psi Foundation is chartered.
 
1951
The Alpha Kappa Psi Foundation is incorporated. It is the not-for-profit arm of the fraternity, dedicated to promoting the ideals of AKPsi.
 
1951
The national fraternity becomes incorporated in the state of Illinois and the national headquarters is moved there.
 
1956
Alpha Kappa Psi installs the 100th chapter.
 
1969
The national office is moved to Indianapolis, IN, and is known as the Heritage Center
 
August 7, 1976
Women are admitted into the fraternity under Title IX of the national constitution.
 
1979
Alpha Kappa Psi installs the 200th chapter.
 
1991
A new national headquarters is built and named after J.D. Sparks, a former executive director of the fraternity.
 
2001
The first international chaper is installed in the United Kingdom. Two others follow the same year in the UK.
 
2005
Alpha Kappa Psi installs the 300th chapter, however only roughly 60% of these chapters are still active.
 
April 2005
Alpha Kappa Psi nationals relocates to the present office, known as the heritage center.
